Sometimes ,it’s not the destination but rather the mode of travel undertaken to that destination that fascinates us.
This statement holds true on what you choose to reach the summer capital for Former Madras presidency – Udhagamandalam, widely and famously known as Ooty.
Though the wide road connecting Coimbatore and Ooty is so beautiful with its numerous hairpin bends and loops, it is the journey to ‘Ooty, the Queen of Nilgiri Hills’ in the Old Heritage Train that can take you on a nostalgic trip down memory lane years down the line, while giving you a slice of history to remember.
The First train on this Heritage line ran on good old steam engines in the year 1908 under the British. Even today, a section of the Niligiri Mountain Railway from Mettupalayam to Coonoor is run by six-decade old steam engines. The whole stretch of 48 kms through 16 tunnels, 208 curves and 250 bridges is covered in just about 5 hrs.
The best part of this long travel is the serene beauty of Nilgiri hills that one gets to witness along the route. The coaches of these trains are as old as the engines, and were specially designed in and brought from Britain at that time.
It is being said that the coaches are to be replaced by new ones, manufactured in India very soon.
So, before that happens, book yourself a ride in the vintage classic coaches of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway and soak yourself in historical beauty of this Heritage Train journey. Bookings for this train can be done online also, but they need to be done months in advance.
